The consultation on water security within Sahibganj was held with the objective of sharing experiences on water security plans being developed by Gram Panchayats of Sahibganj. As Sahibganj is also an arsenic afflicted region the Arsenic Network participated in the consultation and shared its experiences from around India on the same issue. The consultation was conducted by PRIA and SATHEE along with Arghyam.

After a long gap, we bring out the second volume of the Arsenic Network Newsletter. Since the last volume of the newsletter, the Network has gone deeper into understanding the arsenic issues in Assam. We have had meetings with the PHED and Health Department in Assam and have also interacted closely with the academic circles there.

The Fluoride and Arsenic Network teams visited Assam with the agenda of establishing contacts with the various stakeholders in Assam. They conducted an exploratory field visit to two fluoride affected villages in Naogaon district. The network teams were accompanied by Dr. Raja Reddy (Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, Apollo Hospitals and Professor Emeritus & Former Director, Nizam’s institute of Medical Sciences) and SuneethaSapur (Director, Akkshaya Foundation).

Sahibganj is one of the identified water quality affected districts in Jharkhand and arsenic contamination is one of the key WQ problems in this area. The Drinking Water Sanitation Department, Government of Jharkhand (DWSD, GoJ) is building a multi-village water supply scheme (MVS) to provide safe drinking water to three WQ affected (two of which are arsenic affected) blocks in Sahibganj.

The initiation meeting for the Arsenic Knowledge and Action Network was held on October 22–23, 2013 at Hyderabad. The meeting was attended by participants from across the country and various sectors. The aim of the meeting was to set short term and long term goals and objectives for the network.Also to identify areas where the network should aim to carry interventions and/or knowledge curation/generation.
